The Doctors House, Longridge

A 17th Century Legacy

Challenge

The Resident Landlord, Kelvin Pinder, of this 17th century landmark has been made aware of the deteriorating condition of the roof at "The Doctors House" located in Longridge, Lancashire.

This building is part of the 1980 "General Improvement Area" and as part of the schedule to renovate the roof, Kelvin approached IDS Drone Pilot to carry out a visual survey of the current roof condition. After an initial site visit and risk assessment it was agreed that we would use our Mavic 2 Zoom UAV to carry out the inspection. We invited the architect’s RS Design Consultants to be present to ensure the areas required were captured to their satisfaction.

The prime issues for the operation was the location of the building very close to the B6244 Preston Road, with constant traffic and the local bus passing every 10 mins. Other necessary considerations were the close proximity of other residential properties, a school and general pedestrian traffic. With the legal requirements of the CAA and our Operations manual we were obliged and did inform all the local area of the planned operation, including the local police, schools and ensure that the airspace we required was not restricted. As PfCO registered operators IDS Drone Plot were able to use the permissions available without having to obtain special CAA exclusions.

Added Value

Modern un-manned aerial vehicles (UAV’s) are small, light, relatively inexpensive and fantastically manoeuvrable. Builders, surveyors, architects and DIYers all know that accessing any roof will include many difficulties, primarily, health and safety, costs, time, man power, skill.

Traditional methods include old fashioned scaffold with the many safety risks and costs that are obvious, cherry pickers are expensive to buy and rent, also you will need a skilled operator and ladders in a busy area are a no go. Even with these solutions, getting safe visual line of sight to in-accessible areas is very restricting. The time to construct the scaffolding or deliver the cherry picker will be frustrating and expensive. Our DJI Mavic 2 Zoom and Pro UAV’s are state of the art equipment and can be set up ready for operation within 20 mins and get to very restricted areas under our skilled operators’ control.

The images are up to 20MP stills or 4K video. They can hover and manoeuvre in designated safe place’s and capture quite incredible images. The client can immediately see and choose the exact images on a 1080 HD screen and decide what is needed for their purposes.
